A changed humanitarian landscape demands a different approach

The world is changing before our eyes. Crises are becoming more numerous and complex, while funding for humanitarian action is shrinking. The old ways are no longer fit for purpose. The humanitarian sector can no longer simply talk about reform. It has no choice but to act – urgently and decisively – or risk failing at-risk communities. In this context, ESUPS exists to be a vehicle for meaningful change, starting with a reform of humanitarian supply chains. We challenge organisations to step out of their comfort zones, to take risks on new approaches, and to prioritise overall system efficiency over single organisational mandates.
Having the courage to change our approach
As the sector faces a moment of crisis, it is clear that the status quo is no longer sufficient. Common sense approaches are required to minimise inefficiencies and reduce inter-agency competition. We already know the solutions, including:
- Engaging in genuine collaboration: organisations must demonstrate trust and truly embrace interdependence.
- Using digital tools like STOCKHOLM: making data-driven decisions that put power in the hands of national actors.
Ultimately, individual agencies must accept the need to compromise in order for the entire system to become more effective. ESUPS continues to push for these solutions, no matter how uncomfortable they may be. The question is: do we have the courage to collectively rise to the challenge?
WHH’s commitment to shaping the future of the humanitarian system
Against this backdrop of change, ESUPS has not been immune to shifting funding realities. However, we are fortunate to share the aspirations of Welthungerhilfe (WHH), which has confirmed its continued support of ESUPS and the hosting of the STOCKHOLM platform.
WHH’s decision is a reflection of our shared commitment to lead activities that contribute to system transformation. For ESUPS, this centres on the reform of humanitarian logistics – more specifically, the optimisation of prepositioned stock. This complementarity allows us to keep pursuing our mission and driving forward the change we believe in. It allows ESUPS to advocate for greater efficiency and effectiveness in humanitarian supply chains. It is a recognition that ESUPS’ work – anchored in preparedness, collaboration, digitalisation, and localisation – is more critical than ever.
Calling the humanitarian community to action
This is a pivotal moment for the humanitarian sector. As the world changes, so must we. This is the moment to build deeper connections across organisations, and to design a system that is better equipped to meet future needs. ESUPS is committed to this changing humanitarian logistics for the better, in partnership with WHH. But no single organisation can transform the system alone. We need additional partners who are ready to step up and donors to lead this transformation across different parts of the humanitarian sector.
It’s not going to be easy, but together, we can make change for the better. Can we count on you? Contact us to contribute to our efforts on humanitarian reform.
